BID & Hammer's Fine Art Auction on 30th November 2010
After the stupendous response to the previous two auctions held in March and August 2010 respectively in Bangalore, The Auction house is presenting Bid & Hammer’s Sale 0007 in New Delhi which has been aptly titled ‘Significant Indian Paintings’ after much pondering, as it also reflects their ongoing endeavour to bring to the fore works of unsung heroes of modern Indian art’s germination period. Apart from this fact, They have also tried to showcase some of the more unusual works of the masters such as Raja Ravi Varma’s portrait of a scholarly Maharaja Serfoji II of Tanjore embellished with gomedhaks which shows the influence of the traditional Tanjore School, F N Souza’s tribute to Rabindranath Tagore besides other rare yet trademark works and Jamini Roy’s female nude which is one of his earliest works whilst he was shifting over to his now acclaimed folk style.
They also have on offer prominent works of Nicholas Roerich, H Mazumdar, Allah Bux and a host of other known as well as unknown or relatively unknown artists. I must stress again, the latter two categories have only added to the curatorial significance of this auction. On the same note, we have a work by Pranay Ranjan Roy, an artist whose work is appearing for the first time ever in an auction in India!
As a full fledged auction house that looks at art beyond the realm of just Indian contemporary paintings and drawings, They are conducting an auction of paintings after a deliberately prolonged lull and this, because in my opinion the market for Indian paintings is just about coming to terms with the burst in the pricing bubble that has engulfed it for a while now. On a more positive and also realistic note, challenges such as these are the ones that excite us and motivate them as they continue to strive and offer significant and quality works at the most competitive estimates. Even though I feel that the artists and the works under consideration deserve higher estimates, I want the bidders to have the final say, as this is the very purpose of an open market auction mechanism. Accordingly this forthcoming auction offers a diverse selection of works, including art books & prints, at estimates starting from just Rs.20,000 and going up to Rs.1,75,00,000 ($ 435 to $380,400) and as always, you can be rest assured that any lot you wish to own will be worth the winning bid.
I would also like to mention about their association with American Express Banking Corporation, which will enable Amex Platinum Card holders to promptly collect a paddle at the venue upon swiping their card.
